That reports PlayStation Friday. The post-apocalyptic game thus pushes Final Fantasy 7 Remake to the throne. In April, 3.5 million copies of that game were sold for the first three days. Before that, Spider-Man was at the top for a while, with 3.3 million units in the first weekend.
The milestone is striking, as the PlayStation 4 is nearing the end of its seven-year life cycle.
Criticism from angry gamers
The game follows the young woman Ellie, who fights through a world full of infected zombie-like, militias and sects. Ellie has a lesbian relationship in the game. A group of gamers was angry at that. They boycotted the game and deliberately gave the game low ratings on review sites and in web shops. That action did not work, given the sales figures.
"We are so grateful to the millions of fans around the world who have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the past week," said Neill Druckman, director of the game.
“We wanted to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. It was so incredible to hear how the experience resonated with so many of you and to witness the kind of thoughtful discussions it sparked. ”
